The cost of replacing a carpet depends mainly on three things: the size of the room, the quality of carpet you choose, and whether fitting, underlay and old carpet removal are included in the price. As a rough UK guide, a small bedroom in a budget carpet can come in under £300, while a larger living room in a mid-range carpet, fully fitted, typically runs £700 to £1,000. With a pay weekly plan, most people spread that across weekly payments rather than paying it all upfront.
What’s actually included in the cost of a new carpet?
The price on a carpet roll rarely tells the full story. A proper carpet replacement usually includes:
- The carpet itself, priced by fibre type and pile weight
- Underlay, which adds comfort and helps the carpet last longer
- Removal and disposal of your old carpet, though this varies by company, some include it, some don’t
- Fitting, gripper rods and door bars
Quotes that only show a price per square metre for the carpet itself can look cheaper than they actually are, once underlay, fitting and disposal are added on separately, the total is often noticeably higher than the headline figure.
How much does it cost to carpet a room, by size?
Prices vary a fair bit depending on the source and the quality assumed, but as a general guide, fully supplied and fitted:
- Bedroom: roughly £300 to £800
- Living room: roughly £700 to £1,000
- Stairs and landing: often £300 to £600, more if the layout is complex
- Whole 3-bedroom house: typically £2,800 to £4,000
These are general market ranges, not a quote, the exact figure depends on your room dimensions and the carpet tier you choose. That’s exactly what our budget calculator is built for, put in what you’re comfortable spending and it shows you what’s realistic for your room, rather than guessing from a national average.
What makes carpet cost more or less?
Fibre type is the biggest factor. Budget polypropylene carpets sit at the lower end and suit bedrooms, rentals or short-term fixes. Mid-range twist pile carpets are the most common choice for family homes, offering a good balance of comfort and durability. Wool and wool-blend carpets sit at the premium end, they hold their pile for longer and feel warmer underfoot, but cost more upfront.
Room size matters too, obviously, but so does room shape. An awkward layout with alcoves, bay windows or lots of doorways uses more carpet than the floor area alone suggests, since fitters need to allow for pattern matching and waste. Stairs and landings often cost more per square metre than a simple rectangular room because of the extra cutting and fitting time involved.
Are there any hidden extras to budget for?
A few small costs and jobs catch people out if they’re not asked about upfront. With My Dream Flooring, lifting and removing your old carpet isn’t included in the plan, it needs to be cleared before your fitter arrives, so it’s worth factoring in if you’ll need to arrange that separately. Moving furniture out of the room is also down to you, unless you’ve agreed otherwise with your rep. If a door no longer clears the new carpet and underlay, it may need trimming too. None of these are usually large jobs individually, but they’re worth asking about at your home visit so there are no surprises on fitting day.
This is exactly why a fixed, upfront quote matters more than a low headline price per square metre. A quote that separates out fitting, underlay and any extras clearly is far easier to compare and budget against than one that only shows the cost of the carpet itself.
How can I make replacing my carpet more affordable?
The biggest cost barrier for most people isn’t the total price, it’s having to find it all in one go. That’s the whole reason pay weekly plans exist. At My Dream Flooring, plans start from around £10 a week with up to £1,500 credit available, interest free, so you’re not choosing between a carpet you can actually afford and one you actually like.
Every carpet order also comes with 10mm luxury underlay as standard, not the 8mm most companies fit, plus free grippers and door bars included, so those extras that inflate other quotes are already built in. There’s no credit check, we look at what’s affordable for you instead, and the full price is told to you upfront at your first appointment, nothing added later.
